ABC News: 2024/2025 Mid-year budget review

For the first time in 2024, community legal services had to turn away more people than they were able to help. With demand for free legal help rising, services are struggling to help families in need.

Chelsea McKinney CEO stated “we are turning away almost 800 people from community legal services every week, these are people in family violence situations, struggling to pay their rent and struggling to pay their bills” and “Today’s budget update provided no extra state funding, so community legal services will keep turning away thousands more people than they can help.” 

In the Mid Year Review, we were disappointed that there was no increase in funding for community legal services, despite overwhelming demand. Chelsea spoke to Nic Perpitch from ABC Perth about the need for investment to help WA families.
