The Pilbara has the highest rents in the state and housing is a major issue. We welcome the Federal Government’s investment to unlock social and affordable housing supply but we need an urgent effort right now for front line services in the Pilbara.
Pilbara Community Legal Service Inc is turning away hundreds of people needing tenancy support. We know this is only the tip of the iceberg. Funding for tenancy advocacy helps only 5% of the people in rental distress.
Alongside housing investment, we need more investment in homelessness and tenancy advocacy services that community legal services provide as these help renters keep a roof over their heads. They prevent homelessness.
We echo Shelter WA’s call for 5000 homes a year across the state to meet current and projected demand to 2041.
