People with disability should be able to access Western Australia’s justice system on an equal basis with everyone else. Yet too many continue to face significant barriers when seeking legal help or navigating the justice system.
The Law Reform Commission of Western Australia is reviewing how people with disability experience the justice system through Project 115: Access to Western Australia’s justice system by persons with a disability.
Community Legal WA consulted with member organisations across the state to better understand the experiences of people with disabilities interacting with the justice system. Drawing on those consultations and research into legal need, our preliminary response identifies the key barriers to accessing justice, with particular attention to the challenges faced in regional, rural and remote Western Australia. It also outlines practical reforms to improve access to justice for people with disabilities.
